Can I install antivirus software and use it while in safe mode?

If I buy an antivirus CD will I be able to install and run it while the computer is in safe mode? I have XP with SP2.

First Install
then restart

then, restart again, this time holding down the F8 key as soon as you see the black and white text.

Hold F8 down until you see the black and white menu.
I think Safe Mode is F5.

Run the AV
